WHO WE ARE

At Write Your Best Book, our team of trained, highly skilled, professional editors (see bottom of page for profiles) specialize in all genres of fiction romance, suspense, thrillers, fantasy, paranormal, horror, sci-fi, historical fiction, picture books, children’s books, and much more!

We’ve also done extensive work with nonfiction books from memoirs to self-help and spiritual books.

We are also an LGBTQ+ friendly service, so feel free to submit your diverse fiction!

The only genre we prefer not to work with are those that exploit women and/or blurs the lines when it comes to dubious consent.

MORE ABOUT US

OUR TYPICAL SCHEDULE

Our editing schedule is typically booked out at least 4 weeks, but we can often find room to squeeze in one new project, and we’re always on the lookout for fresh, new editors, so don’t stress too much about the start date. However, if you do need us to start working on your manuscript ASAP, please indicate that in your email when you submit your sample pages!

TWO-WAY STREET!

Please also note that we think of this service as a two-way street. While you can (and should) do thorough research on any editors you are considering working with (even us!), and while it’s completely within your right to choose a different editor if you feel they’re a better fit, it goes both ways. We are an incredibly busy, reputable, and in-demand editing service, so we cannot (sadly) take on every project for which we receive a submission. Like, you, we must consider several factors when evaluating your manuscript in order to determine if we’re a good match. Some of those factors include:

  • Wordcount of book/time required to edit
  • Our comfort level with the story’s content/message
  • The level of editing needed/required for the book
  • Our current schedule and availability
  • The client’s desire, drive, and willingness to learn

So, please keep this in mind when submitting to us. But don’t stress over this or worry that we’re “too picky.” In fact, we only turned down 5 manuscripts all of last year. The chances are high that we will be willing and able to provide you with editing service.

While our standard rates are published here on this page because we have nothing to hide, we have found that the best way to see if we’re a good match is for us to provide you with a FREE sample edit, exact quote, and turnaround time.

HOW TO SUBMIT

PLEASE DO NOT REQUEST A FREE SAMPLE EDIT IF YOU ARE NOT READY TO HIRE AN EDITOR!

Your manuscript does not have to be completed (but should almost be), and you will never be pressured into signing on the dotted line right away. However, please be considerate of the fact that our editors are offering you free services and they are working hard to show you not only what they can do to help you but what they feel would make your manuscript shine. It’s a service we provide totally at no cost to you, even though it takes, on average 2 hours to complete each one. If you are just “window shopping” or if you’re “just curious” about editors and editing services, we recommend you spend some time on this site and others, learning about your options while you decide when you’ll be ready to make that commitment.

Please use the form on the CONTACT US page to submit your request for a FREE sample edit and request. You will then receive the easy to follow instructions via email. Once you submit the requested information and your first 5 pages, we’ll immediately start your sample edit and quote, and we’ll get it back to you in less than 48 hours GUARANTEED! (But the average turnaround time for sample edits is less than 24 hours!)

We’ll do a thorough line edit, as well as a content/developmental edit of your sample pages to show you all the things we can do for you.

Then, we’ll use our standard rate, and based on what we see in the sample and how much editing is needed, we’ll calculate what your exact fee would be, your payment plan options, and the estimated turnaround time.

HOW TO REVIEW SAMPLE EDITS/QUOTE

Here is how we recommend you review your edits and quote. Please note:

  • Your line edits will come back to you inside the pages you sent, using Track Changes in Word
  • You will need Word to open/review our edits (you’ll need word to query/publish anyway, so click HERE to get Word for only $6/month!)
  • When you open your sample line edits, make sure you have turned on track changes by clicking the Review tab, then Tracking, then View All. This will enable you to see all our line edits as well as margin comments, which is SUPER important.
  • Your content/developmental editing suggestions will come to you in a separate Word document (again, necessary to have Word) where we list all our feedback on plot, character development, timeline, pacing, structure, etc. in bulleted list form including page numbers.
  • The quote will come as a PDF document, so make sure you have that so you can open it (most computers come with PDF standard reader, but they are free downloads online if not).
  • The quote will break down our rate for your project and will include exact fees for line edits, content edits, combination of both discount, and any other discounts we may have applied, as well as our estimated timeline (typically 4-6 weeks).

If you have any difficulty whatsoever opening any of these attachments or if you think you’re not seeing everything (like margin comments), please shoot us an email at info@writeyourbestbook.com and let us know so we can help.

IF YOU ACCEPT OUR PROPOSAL

Once you have had a chance to review our entire proposal package, you’ll notice that there’s a button inside the email you received with the sample and quote that says ACCEPT QUOTE. If you agree to our terms, turnaround time, and our fee, all you have to do is click that button, and you’ll automatically be funneled into our “New Client” system! Within 24 hours, you’ll receive the following:

  • Service Agreement (to be signed electronically)
  • Invoice (for first payment, can be paid with any credit/debit card through email)
  • Onboarding Package

Please note, however, while we will have provided you with all these things automatically because you clicked ACCEPT QUOTE, you are not officially our client UNTIL the agreement is electronically signed by both parties and the invoice for your first payment is paid. But once those are taken care of, that is when we’ll send another email asking you to attach your manuscript, and that’s when the fun begins!

IF YOU ARE STILL UNSURE

This is completely fine. As we already mentioned, this is a two-way street. Even though we’ve made you an offer (which means we REALLY want to work with you), you are under no obligation to use to pick our services.

To help you decide, please be sure not to hold back any questions, comments, or concerns. Often, we find that there might be the slightest misunderstanding, especially since it’s a lot of information, and/or there might be something we can do to clarify or make changes to our proposal if need be.

We also do support your right to consider other offers. But we do offer this word of caution – please be super careful when seeking an editor! Sadly, as self-publishing has increased tremendously in popularity the past few years, the number of folks who call themselves editors has increased exponentially. They’re either inexperienced, not well trained, or not trustworthy. And even if you don’t decide to come onboard with us, we want you to be happy, satisfied, and safe, so please keep these important things in mind while researching editors:

All the above applies to me and my staff of editors, as well. I am super proud of my reputation in the writing community, and I only hire editors who are highly qualified, trained, and who have a natural skill for editing (and a minimum 5 years of experience).

IF YOU DECIDE NOT TO HIRE US

If this is the case, that’s totally fine, too. While we’re sad because if I sent you a proposal, it means I truly wanted to work with you, above all else, I want you to be happy with your choice of editor. So, if that means you go with someone else, I will respect your decision and wish you the absolute best of luck. But even then, there will be no hard feelings, and we would love for you to stay in touch! Use the links on the CONTACT US page to reach out and/or follow us on social media!

OUR STANDARD RATES

Here are the standard rates we use to calculate the rate and fee we will send in your quote along with your sample edit. Please keep in mind…this is a standard rate. We reserve the right to increase or even decrease said rate, depending on factors such as amount of editing required, level of skill from editor needed, time required to complete, as well as any current promotions/discounts we may be offering. Also note that, I do not only regularly monitor the industry standard rates, I also monitor my competitors’ rates (of similar skillset, training, and years in practice) and I always make sure to keep my rate below theirs.

Thank you for taking the time to read this page. I know it’s a lot to digest, but there are two reasons I’m so “wordy” on my website pages.

I’m just wordy and talkative by nature. Whether it’s because of my ADHD or just my winning personality, I love sharing the information I have with others who may not have it, and aside from that…I just like to talk.

I believe in being totally transparent as a business owner and author service provider. As mentioned above, there are too many sketchy, so-called “editors” out there taking advantage of eager authors, so I want to put all my cards on the table. That, and I want you to be informed.

Whatever you decide to do, remember that here at Write Your Best Book, we don’t just offer editing services. We provide free resources for all who need it, so be sure to check out the Author Resources page before you go. There might be a course or a resource you still might be able to use on your writing journey.

MEET THE WRITE YOUR BEST BOOK EDITORS!

Jen Selinsky

Hi, I'm Jen. I've been writing ever since I was fifteen years old. My first book was published in 2001, and I haven't stopped writing since. I am a hybrid author and have published over 200 books in multiple genres. I received my MLS from Clarion University of Pennsylvania in December 2004, and I am now a semi-retired librarian. In addition to working on my own books, I am an editor and ghostwriter. When time permits, I also do amateur blogging, photography, and some drawing and painting. I live in southern Indiana with my husband.

Kirsty McQuarrie

Hi, I'm Kirsty! I'm from Scotland, a beautiful country known for its whiskey, friendly people, and constant rain. I love Pilates, dogs (of course, who doesn't?), reading, and trying any cuisine I can find. I have two passions in life: travel and literature. I've spent the last ten years absorbed with both, reading every book under the sun while traveling the world, so you might say I've been living the life. I always enjoy a good romance novel, but, equally, love any genre from Sci-Fi to historical, fantasy to contemporary - I become enthralled with compelling characters and intricate plots, no matter the story type. Becoming an editor allowed me to combine my passions and find a new one along the way: helping authors make their writing the best it can be while creating more books for people to fall in love with. I've spent the last 5 years working this dream job, helping writers find their voice and reading new, fantastic literature each and every day.
