Author Interview: Meeka James

Hello, friends! It’s time for another author interview, and today we’re sitting down with Author Meka James.

Meka James is a writer of adult contemporary and erotic romance. A born and raised Georgia Peach, she still resides in the southern state with her hubby of 16 years and counting. Mom to four kids of the two legged variety, she also has four fur-babies of the canine variety. Leo the turtle and Spade the snake rounds out her wacky household. When not writing or reading, Meka can be found playing The Sims 3, sometimes Sims 4, and making up fun stories to go with the pixelated people whose world she controls.

InterviewDid you ever consider writing under a pseudonym? If so, what was it?I’d have to say yes LOL Meka James is a pseudonym.
What’s your ultimate writing goal?I’m a simple gal and don’t really want much. My ultimate goal is to be someone’s “go-to” author. Not on a Misery level of #1 fan, but to have someone that is eager for the books I put out each time would be the best.
Do you believe writing is a gift or a learned skill?A little bit of both. Craft wise if you put in the effort you can improve the mechanics of your writing. The gift aspect is in being a storyteller. Writing a manual or how-to types of story is different than bring a world to life. The imagination needs to be there and you need to have the ability to spin a tale in an interesting way.
What did you edit out of your most recent book?It wasn’t an edit out really, but more a tweak based on feedback from my sensitivity reader in regards to a shower sex scene.
How do you name your characters?I don’t have any real process for that. As the beginning scenes come to me the names simply come about as I try to figure out one that I haven’t used yet, and fits the beginning personality of the characters. To date, I’ve only changed 2 names in the middle of the writing process.
Do you read your book reviews? Why or why not?I do sometimes. Yes, yes I know reviews are for readers and all, but I write the stories to share with the public so sometimes curiosity gets the better of me and I want to know what the public thinks of it.
Are any parts of your book(s) auto-biographical?Um…not really. I pull character traits from myself sometimes and from those around me. It’s the best way I know to have a fully-fledged and believable character.
Do you write to music? If so, what do you listen to?OMG yes! Each book has its own playlist. I build it as I go based on songs I randomly hear on the radio or if I go looking for songs with a certain theme to get the list started. Like when I was starting out with Anything Once, I knew that story was going to be very sex focused so I looked for songs that were all about making love to get the list started. After that more were added to address my characters and their relationship.
Have you ever been contacted by a non family/friend fan? Yes and man is it the best feeling! For someone to not only buy and read your work, but to also take the time to send you a personal message about how your words affected them. I save each email.
Have you ever thought of writing outside your genre? Not really. It’s a matter of knowing what you’re a little good at for me. My daughter would love for me to write something YA because she can’t handle her mom writing ‘those’ type of scenes but wants a book by me that she can read. LOL One day maybe, just for her, but I’m pretty much stuck in the adult contemporary arena.
